If -2 = -2

(4 – 6) = (1 – 3)

add 9/4 to both sides

(4 – 6 + 9/4 ) = (1 – 3 + 9/4)

Simplify and factorise

(2 – 3/2)² = (1 – 3/2)²

Square root both sides

Et Voila

2 = 1

If a = b

a^2 = ab
a^2 – b^2 = ab – b^2

Factorise to give

(a – b) (a + b) = b (a – b)

Common factor on each side cancels to give

a + b  = b

Since a = b

b + b = b
2b = b
2 = 1
